For Thursday, February 23: Finding a Focal Point (Box 19)

For this activity, you need to review all the data you have collected and find the clusters of themes and patterns in your field site or topic (instructions on p. 193 in your text). By the way, did you know that the word "topic" comes from the Greek word topos, which means "place"? Now you know. So whether your "place" is geographical or metaphorical, this activity still works.

  1. One focal point that I have noticed about blogging and, especially, video blogging, is that 99% of those people will make them at their house. With video blogging, people actually use their own room a lot of the time. They will turn on a focal light that shines on their face or just shoot in a well lit room. They then arrange a background that acts like a video backdrop so that the viewer can make sense of what they are watching. Sometimes it will be the same wall covered in posters every week and sometimes it will be in the same spot on their bed every Wednesday.

  2. The focal point that I have noticed about substance abuse is that there are many different factors that can cause people to develop addictions, but the main one is having a traumatic experience in their lives that causes them to turn to drugs.

  3. Even though my paper is about the changes about the sport of waterfowl hunting. Many of my sources point out some things that have remained consistent throughout the evolution of the sport. Many hunters still do it for fun, to spend time with friends, and to enjoy nature. I guess the reason why people hunt doesn't change, even though the way we go about has changed.

  4. I am going to try to define blues. There are many different types of blues, but the essence is similar in nature since they are derived form the one origin. I will be analyzing thee types of blues and compare it to the roots and see what they have in common and what their differences are. This will be to help my self and others recognize the different styles.

  5. My focal point is how homophobic oppression and negative persecution toward the gay community affects society as a whole and diminishes psychological confidence and happiness in homosexuals today. I have found that many people who undergo this type of depression have families who do not support their lifestyle. The family is one of the most important aspects in feeling 'accepted' and without that, homosexuals will blame themselves and repress their emotions/natural sexual feelings.

  6. Something that I have noticed that every cult must have is a charismatic leader. If there is no charismatic leader, there would be no one to guide them, and teach them the "doctrine". Most cult leaders have an
astonishing ability to charm and win over followers, and most will claim to have knowledge that the followers do not.

  7. The focal point that I am drawn to, when looking back over interview notes and through articles and books, can best be summed up as the idea that history tends to repeat itself. I have found articles, websites, and books, that give numerous examples of mansions that were built by wealthy men who had the money to spend on buildings that would outdo their friends and colleagues. Whether I would go back to the 1800's or 1900's, this was still a trend. These mansions then would either be abandoned, eventually falling into a state of destruction or getting destroyed by a fire, or they would exchange hands many times before finally being bought by the government or the community and turned into a museum or community center. It was nice to read, in the majority of my articles, that the mansions where still standing and had been rescued by individuals who saw the importance of keeping these small pieces of history alive. Unfortunately not all were so lucky, as seen in the case of my family's mansion. However, this saddening part of history can be looked at in a better light, as more and more efforts are being made to save the number of large windows into the history of our country that are still left, and more people have started caring. These steps that are being taken give more hope to those like me who only wish that eventually these masterpieces wont be taken for granted.

  8. One focal point I see in studies about ALS is there are so many severe symptoms and absolutely no way of fully getting rid of them. There are certain medications or therapies people can go through, but at the end of the day they will always have these symptoms which sadly lead to death. No matter how much care a caretaker can give them, there's no stopping ALS and once the main symptoms hit and keep progressing, there's no turning back.

  9. There are so many different ways i could take this paper. I think the focal point i want to show is the negivite way society views peopel with psychological disorders. I want to show the reasons why and where these views came from. I also want to show the differences between the mental disorders because i know that they can get confused especially when symptoms overlap eachother. Overall i want to make peopel think about the way they view people with psychological disorders.

  10. There are a couple different points when it comes to childhood obesity. My focal point is the diet for the children. I want to show just what foods are getting the kids to obesity. The diet is a huge piece to end obesity. My focal point will involve the children's parents and school lunches. Those two places contribute a majority of where kids eat. I hope to show and have people think about what their children eat.

  11. The main focal point that I constantly notice is the emphasis on "assumed heterosexuality." It goes into my topic of gender identity, because if a person doesn't say otherwise, some people automatically think they are heterosexual.

  12. The main focus of my paper is how obesity is viewed in society. Basically there is a side that reject obestiy and wants everyone to be thin and healthy, then there is the side that are happy with themselves just the way they are

  13. The main focus of my paper is "The American Dream". The main theme that I've seen consistently throughout my search for sources, is that "The American Dream" is in jeopardy. I am examining in depth why this is happening.

  14. Andrea's post:

    Fieldworking: Box 19

Upon reviewing the notes that I had taken for my response for box 18, I noticed a few contradictions in what should have been a neutral observation. I understand that, as I was a part of that observation in some manner, it is difficult to disentangle myself entirely. I would still like to attempt to clarify.

I realize that I made some of my friends seem flippant and even disinterested with those parts of the study session that they did not need to review. That stems primarily from my personal view of always being engaged regardless of whether or not it is necessary for me. I did not mean to imply that they were any less serious about their studies. They just really were already quite proficient in that area and did not need further review.

The second and most glaring error that I made is in regards to my friend, Emiko. I made a comment about her not having any difficulty with a Japanese accent. I failed to embellish on that point. She is half-Japanese but it is because she goes to Tokyo every summer and therefore has a real opportunity to speak to native speakers that her accent is so much better than

  15. As i have shifted the theme of my topic, i have begun to look for a more direct focus. In dorm life, i am obviously biased because i am experiencing it first-hand, however i would like to focus on other's experiences. Most dorms are straight hallways though some are more intricate; along the hallways doors fill the space leading into many different worlds, or different perspectives of the world. They each have points of view that draw from their personal encounters, thus each have a different experience. Students that live in the dorms are much closer to everything on campus: libraries, classes and of course dining halls. There are so many things that make living in dorms a very different experience.

  16. Foster care is vary diverse and could have many focal points, but I think the one I am going to try to direct my paper towards is how foster care affects children long term and about the family relationships within foster care. Since there is so much information, it is very easy to get sidetracked from my focus, but I think I can incorporate all my sources into some aspect in my paper.

  17. Through researching and interviewing, I have come to realize that there are thousands of people in the world that don't have access to professional drum lessons and because of this, they might loose their passion for the drums and just let it be maybe even less than a recreational hobby. Because of technology, people all over the world are able to watch a live drum lesson from one teacher in their own homes. Talk about a revolution ! A lot of these people are far away from music stores that offer drum lessons and through a simple streaming website, thousands of people are able to learn about drums.
