For this project my research has undergone 3 different specific changes and therefore it has been refined several times as well. Now i have honed in on what i believe will be the focus of my research for my paper: the livelihood of dormitory residents. I am looking at students that live in a dorm environment and how it effects them in both social and academic aspects. As i write and continue my research i will find exactly what i want to really work on and that will further refine my research. I have a wide variety of information because of where i started: which was with resident assisting. I later moved on to student retention and what all happens to try to keep students in school but then as i was learning about student retention, i finally realized that dorm life was just more interesting to me. Thus, dormitory living will be the theme and how its everything from crazy, serious and helpful to most of all: an experience. I realize that is where the bias comes in, so i will have to try to avoid my personal involvement in the topic.
i have found my topic to be quite interesting. Although I have the same outlook i did before researching the topic, i have better perspective on internet addiction. I could say myself at one point i was addicted to the internet and didnt even know it until i reasearched the topic. I researched the many different characteristics and subtypes of internet addiction. Overall i am trying to prove that internet addiction is a big problem in society today and people dont even know it.
My research concentrates on blogging, it's various venues, and its effects on the world at large as well as the individual. Some people are concerned about the freedom the web offers us in relation to "poliblogs" about politics and other such blogs dedicated to sensitive issues. However, I believe that this is very freeing to the individual, who may not have had a voice before now and is finally finding a venue where they can be heard and respected by a cohesive online community. I hope my research will yield further information about these "communities" as well and I hope to find out if that is what makes blogging even more popular.
My paper will analyze and educate people on the psychological mindset of homosexuals developed when those who are against the gay lifestyle express negative opinions and use homophobic slurs toward them. It will describe how anti-gay legislation and oppression in society causes emotional distress and how respect toward every sexuality will bring out more self-confidence and equality in America today. I will give examples of past and present testimonials, which will support my argument including my previous interviews and online examples. Persecution and discrimination toward the gay community affects society as a whole and leaving this behind will better America.
I have found my research on cults to be very interesting. It concentrates on what exactly a cult is, when happens once a person is inside a cult, what traits a leader of a cult must have, and how a person and get out and get better. Though there are many cults in history and today, I only concentrated on one cults, The People’s Temple led by Jim Jones because I think it has had the biggest impact on how people think about cults, because it claimed the lives of over 900 people. Through this paper people will hopefully get better insight and no the signs of those who are in a cult, and help them get out.
Post Traumatic Stress disorder is a very interesting and broad topic. I have narrowed down my research to PTSD in soldiers recently returning from war. I also did research on soldiers who have came back from previous wars such as the Gulf War, and Vietnam. It was very interesting to find out different types of ways to treat this disorder and how many people cope with it. PTSD affects many people in and out of the military, and that is why I decided to do my research on this topic.
My paper will look at the progression of the sport of waterfowl hunting in terms of technological advancements, equipment sophistication, and federal regulation. I will look at various perspectives from both hunters and non-hunters alike on the issue of hunting ethics and whether or not the use of certain technologies in duck hunting are considered ethical or not. I think it is important to look at the advancements of a sport like duck hunting to determine where the sport will go in the future. The camaraderie one can experience when waterfowl hunting is one of the biggest pay-offs the sport has to offer.
My paper will talk about the actually caring aspects of people with Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. I will include what exactly the disease is, its cause, symptoms, and some treatments that are said to help postpone the disease for a while. My main focus though will be on how I would help people with daily responsibilities that they can't do anymore by themselves. This will include things such as getting dressed, eating, showering, transferring, giving out medications, therapies or massages, etc. This will give me a better understanding of what these people have to go through everyday and someday when I am a nurse I will already know how to take care of them.
My over all goal of this proposal was to gain a better understanding of blues since I didn't even know the basics. My research project is not limited to really any one aspect, but the blues as a whole. I did however focus on one problem in the late 50's and early 60's. This problem was focused on African Americans not thinking that Caucasians' performances of blues was authentic. This all had to do with their roots and how the blues originated. The blues music started off as a song of oppression from being enslaved here in America. Throughout this process of researching, I have gained not only a better understanding but a better appreciation as well.
For this paper i just want to clear up confusion on psychological disorders. I am going to use my own personal experiences as well as expert testimony from doctors and experimenters who have examined many different illnesses. I also want to show the differences between the diseases as well as prove that having an illness doesnt mean you are 'crazy'. I will also be showing a counter-opinion from those who dont really believe that psychological disorders really exist. I want to erase a stigma and answer questions that most of the time people dont want to ask.
The question I want to try to answer is the following: Should America’s society continue to push obese individuals to become healthier and thinner or should America’s society take pressure off of obese individuals? Some believe that obese individuals need to get into better shape. There has been an alarming increased rate in obesity in America’s society so it is indeed a very large problem. Some believe that acceptance of obese individuals is what is most important. Perhaps America, a well-known country for hard work, is asking too much from obese individuals. One cannot make the argument without proper research and specific knowledge of the subject. There are many different views on this issue. Because I have not done a complete research I am still undecided about my stance on the issue.
Roger Sipher states that, "People would stop regarding them as way stations for adolescents and start thinking of them as institutions for educating America's youth."
Roger Sipher proclaimed, "A decline in standardized test scores is but the most recent indicator that American education is in trouble."
Roger Sipher notes that private schools do not have the trouble of students not wanting to attend school. They can kick students out if their effort is not satisfactory or if students do not show up for class.
In "So That Nobody Has To Go To School If They Don't Want To", Roger Sipher argues that school is a place for education and not for people who do not want to learn. Public schools should not force students to attend a school that they don't want to and are failing because of this fact.
My research paper is on the topic of gender identity in society. In our culture we have a habit of categorizing and stereotyping people based on their gender. We have assume roles that we tell people to conform to. Both male and females are expected to behave in certain ways. If they are anything other than heterosexual, they are often attatched to certain that could or could not be true to their personal identity. This encourages discrimination and prejudice, can this can often lead to negative self-actualization. My goal is to gain a better understanding of why society works this way and why we form these kinds of misconceptions.
Since foster care is such a broad topic, for my research paper I have tried to focus my research around three main subjects within foster care. One of the topics I want to learn more about is the history of foster care; I am curious as to whether or not foster care participation has increased or decreased with time, and if it is still as active a system as it was in the past. I am also researching the long term affects foster care has on children participating in it. Lastly, the third part of my research is examining the family aspects of foster care, and how having siblings in the house affects family life and the atmosphere of the home.
The article “So That Nobody Has To Go To School If They Don't Want To” talks about the fact that school should not be mandatory. “mandatory attendance laws force many to attend school who have no wish to be there. Such children have little desire to learn and are so antagonistic to school that neither they nor more highly motivated students receive the quality education that is the birthright of every American.” (Sipher, 31). The article goes into detail about if there were no mandatory laws, schools would be better centers for learning and they would be greater opportunities for those who wanted to learn to actually learn. “Schools should be for education. At present, they are only tangentially so. They have attempted to serve an all-encompassing social function, trying to be all things to all people. In the process they have failed miserably at what they were originally formed to accomplish.” (Sipher, 31). If mandatory attendance was not required, then those who went to school would have a desire to learn and would not be hindered by those who do not want to learn, and the experience would be about ten times better than schools are now.
My project is about achieving the American Dream through Upward Mobility in today’s society. It is very intriguing to see people achieve their goals and dream. But it disturbs me that people aren’t getting the same opportunities and chances that people did 50 years ago. I want to know why this is happen and how to fix it. I plan on using my previous knowledge about this subject, the knowledge that I’ve already researched, and the information from my interview, to help show that it is getting increasingly more difficult to gain upward mobility in society. Which in turn makes it harder to achieve the American Dream. The solution to our social mobility problem starts with our government. If our government can create new opportunities without restrictions then our citizens with have a better chance a upward mobility in society, and be able to achieve their American Dream.
My goal for this paper is to better understand that ways that music has affected the social and political climate of America. Through research, I will provide the reader with a comprehensive view of each shift in the musical paradigm from era to era. I will use specific examples and historical events to pinpoint the the catalyst in each change of the musical archetype for each generation. I will study popular music, how it shapes and relates to the social and cultural structures of society. Music affects society on both large and small scales. It can influence the way that entire cultures think and function in society, and it can also play a crucial role in the formation and perpetuation of smaller subcultures.

Roger Sipher believes that many students plan to graduate high school because it is easy for him or her. " At the point when students could legally quit, most choose to remain since they know they are likely to be allowed to graduate whether they do acceptable work or not." Even though students may not want to graduate, many feel that it is worth it to do average or below average work and still pass with a diploma.
My research project will discuss the causes of addictions and the factors that go into addictions. I also want to talk about the effects of drug abuse on the individual and on those who are close to the individual. One other thing is the treatment of drug abuse, which can be based on things like the severity of the addiction, the amount of motivation, and the individuals desire to be there.
Kate Sturm, Tyler Rollins, Nicole Steining, Dillion Evanczyk
Roger Sipher is basically saying that high school should not be a place where you can drop off kid, it is not a day care, its a high school. His idea is that society should get rid of the law that forces kids to attend high school and allows those who wanted to be there to get a good education. And also if they got rid of those laws the school would have more money to spend else where and teacher wouldn't feel the need to pass failing students. It also goes over other positives of abolishing the laws.
When commenting on the quality of education students are receiving, Roger Sipher said that, "the solution to this problem is simple." Sipher believes the compulsory-attendance laws should be abolished and the students who prove committed to getting an education should be the only ones in school. He states that "communities could use these savings to support institutions to deal with young people not in school." When wrapping up he says, "schools should be for education." According to Sipher, the attempt to educate america is failing due to the dead-weight of those who don't want to educate themselves and implies that it is the fault of the schools.

Roger Sipher argues that educational systems over the years have become social functions instead of solely places to learn. He points out that many students who are required to attend school, due to laws, are hurting the well-being of the students who have the desire to get an education. He remarks that, "While we pay homage to the homily, 'You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink,' we have pretended it is not true in education.". Sipher suggests we should do away with these attendance regulations, pointing out six benefits that would result from doing so. He looks at it from a socioeconomic standpoint, saying that by eliminating these laws, it eliminates the costs of keeping these students in class with the risk of further 'polluting' the classroom. Mr. Sipher's belief that, "Abolition of archaic attendance laws would produce enormous dividends.", is a novel if not risky approach that may deserve further attention in the future.
Roger Sipher has a problem with the fact that many students, which have no desire to be in school, are forced to attend anyway.
Roger suggests that funding might be more effectively invested in institutions that deal with young adults who are not in school, than spent on enforcing compulsory attendance of schools.
“There is no contradiction between the assertion that compulsory attendance has had little effect on the number of children attending school and the argument that repeal would be a positive step toward improving education.”, Roger asserts.
My paper will focus on the usage of English loanwords, called "gairaigo" in the Japanese language, and its effects, if any, on the concept of identity. I want to find out how Japanese people feel about the use of "gairaigo" and what it means for the future of the Japanese language.
For this project, I hope to explain how far passion can take someone in life. Now, I am debating changing topics because the current one is pretty vague, but I would live to get a better understanding of musical passion and what it takes to become a professional musician and to make a name for oneself in the music industry. I have looked and focused on two people, a professional drummer named Mike Johnston, and a friend of mine named Cole Craven. Both people started playing music and loving it but one of them took it by the handful and made an astonishing career out of it. I am also discussing music education in the world right now and how that is possible through technology and social media communication.
With a bit of background on the topic, and family history involved, I plan on looking at historic American mansions and the stories behind them. These pieces of history are important and how they came about as well as what they are like now provides valuable insight. By taking a look at this sliver of history for our country, I think I will be able to show the strengths and weaknesses of these structures, and how they have influenced the communities they were built in.
Childhood obesity is an increasing problem in our world today. Many parents have allowed their children to eat and live unhealthily. Those parents probably don’t understand how to give their kids the proper diet. The children could also just choose to live this kind of life. Either way I want to learn the all about childhood obesity. To learn the physical stress it puts on the child’s body. To find out how a pregnant mother can affect her new born child’s body. I want to learn about how large this problem has become and what people could be doing to prevent it.
