It's time to look for sources on your research topic, so that you can start getting an idea of the conversations taking place: Go to Bracken Library's site, click on the "books" link, and then log into CardCat. Play around with possible key search terms until you find a couple books that look promising. Next, go to the library to find those books. You should also look at the books shelved in the same area to see if you can find anything else interesting that didn't show up on your CardCat search.
Check out the books you want (yes, more than two, if you find good ones), and then reply below, creating a bibliographic entry in MLA format to list the books. You might also want to explain what interested you about the books you chose. Finally, bring those books to class on Thursday--and remember, your First Major Writing Project is also due that day.

Cosi, V., et al. Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. Vol. 209. New York: A Division of Plenum Publishing Corporation, 1987.
Robinson, Ian and Maggie Hunter. Motor Neurone Disease. New York: Routlege, 1998.
I found three books about Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis. The first book I picked up on the first page said ALS A Guide to Patient Care and that's what I want to write my paper on. I flipped through that book and it looked like it had some pictures and good information on my topic. The second book I pick up was a book called Motor Neurone Disease. That disease is very similar to ALS, so I flipped through the pages and saw that it talked about ALS in it so hopefully that will help me do some comparisons. The third book I found was just called Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis also, and it had some good points in the table of contents that I should be able to use for statistics and ways of treatment.

ReplyDeleteFolsom , Merrill. More Great American Mansions. New York: Hastings House. 1967
I feel that this book will be a good resource because it offers a look at mansions that were built all over America, giving background and information on why the houses were built in the first place. I think it will aid my research by providing other examples of houses like the one my relatives lived in so many years ago, and hopefully showing all the different reasons behind constructing such large structures
Folsom, Merrill. Great American Mansions and Their Stories. New York: Hastings House. 1963
The other book I found, by Folsom as well, gives in depth stories of why the mansions were built, along with background information on the people who built them. I hope that the stories will be helpful to my research because, leafing through the book, some of the stories look similar to the one I have been told about my family. Using these stories, I hope to draw parallels and discover more about mansions like the one my family lived it.
Emmelkamp, Paul M. Personality Disorders. New York: Psychological Press. 2007.
ReplyDeleteI thought this would be a good book becuase it gives a diagnosis of the different disorders and some treatments for them. I think it will give me a good scientific aspect of the different disorders that are out there.
Meyer, Robert G. Case Studies in Abnormal Behavior. Boston. Allyn and Bacon. c2003.
This book will be nice because it has a lot of different studies that have been done with psychological disorders. It will give good evidence to what i have wanted to prove or disprove.
Coyle, Adrian, and Celia Kitzinger. Lesbian and Gay Psychology: New Perspectives. Malden, MA: BPS/Blackwell, 2002.
ReplyDeleteThis book discusses a broad range of concerns including social, health, educational, and the psychology behind the gay lifestyle. It debates developmental issues for lesbian and gay youth. The authors of the book hope to contribute to the struggle in legitimizing lesbian and gay psychology on both a local and international level. They use both quantitative and qualitative methods and research is scholarly while also using critical perspectives.
Piontek, Thomas. Queering Gay and Lesbian Studies. Urbana and Chicago: University of Illinois Press, 2006
Queering Gay and Lesbian Studies considers a key problem in accepting the gay lifestyle as a non-gay person and criticizes past queer theories, gay rights disputes, and their lifestyle both in and outside of the gay community. Piontek claims that gay and lesbian studies must change to thrive in the twenty-first century. He recognizes that sexuality is not something one can analyze in a traditional way because sexuality is not developmental, but genetic.

Sinclair, Ian. Fostering Now. London and Piladelphia: Jessica Kingsley Publishers, 2005
I looked for the first two books, and as I was looking in the shelves where I got the first one I saw the third book, all of them provide insight to growing up in foster care. The second book is more of a story, so I don’t know if I will actually end up using it, but the first and third seem like they are books I can use for my research paper. They seem to be more about what I am looking for-what parents and children need to know about foster care and how fostering children affects not only the children and parents but the other siblings in the house.

Since my topic is fairly new still, it was not at the library in the form that I wanted. The library had a lot of information about newscasting and journaling on line, but not much about video blogging. I went to the Articles database and found some really AWESOME articles about vlogging though and I am very excited to start researching vlogging and its impact on the social interactions of young adults today.

These book caught my attention because they are close to my topic: what are the impedient for mastering a foreign language and how to be successful in learning a second language. Another reason is that they are in different levels of the field.

ReplyDeleteBaranowsky, Anna B. "Trauma Practice." New York: General Press, 2011. Book
These books interested me when I first saw them because I knew this is what I want to research. I am interested to begin to research this disorder and begin to better understand it.

ReplyDeleteEpstein, Johnathan. Adolescents and their music : if it's too loud, you're too old. New York: Garland Publishing, 1995. Print.
My topic is a little more ambiguous, and a little less established than many things. I had a hard time finding much that dealt directly with my topic, but there's been much more written on a broader, more sociological plane that ties into the topic I chose very well.

Wesly E. David, Leitch G. William. Fireside Waterfowler. A Ducks Unlimited Book. Stackpole Books. Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. 1987. Book.
These three books span a wide perspective on the subject of waterfowl hunting. Ducks Unlimited, a wetlands conservation organization that restores waterfowl habitat throughout the United States and Canada, gives their view on the history of wetlands conservation and waterfowl hunting throughout history. The other two books are from a hunters perspective on waterfowl hunting and the tradition of the sport.

ReplyDelete2. Appel, Willa. Cults in America: Programmed for Paradise. New York: Holt, Rinehart, and Winston, 1983. Print.
These are two of the five books that I chose from the library on the topic of cults. The first book, Cults: A Reference Handbook will be a great resource because it is filled with ever different type of cult, and details that include, where the movement started and the practices and beliefs.
The second book, Cults in America I feel will be a good resource because because it covers pretty much everything about cults, myths, who joins cults, brainwashing, and getting out.
1. Alternative approaches in music education : case studies from the field / edited by Ann C. Clements.
ReplyDelete2. American industry in international competition : government policies and corporate strategies / edited by John Zysman and Laura Tyson.
These two books I chose from the library consist of the information regarding music education and business. Music education is what Mike Johnston lives his life for in teaching people all over the world about drums and does it with succeeding progress. The second book that I chose regards business and it as a whole. There is competition in the business world and Mike learned how to be a very successful business man with having his own name in the website and by progressing in all the ways that he has so far on a business standpoint.
